Travel to the island of Elba from the Netherlands
There are several ways to travel to the beautiful island of Elba from the Netherlands, depending on your preference and travel style. Here are the options:
By car
From the Netherlands, the drive to Piombino, the port city for Elba, is about 1,400 km and takes about 14-16 hours. The fastest route takes you through Switzerland or via Germany and Austria. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning scenery. In Piombino you can easily take the ferry to Portoferraio, Elba’s largest port.
By train
Traveling by train is comfortable and environmentally friendly. From the Netherlands you travel to Italy, often changing trains in cities such as Paris and Milan. Your final destination is the city of Pisa or Grosseto, after which you travel on to Piombino by regional train. From Piombino you take the ferry to Elba.
By plane
The fastest option is to fly. There are direct flights to Pisa or Florence. From these cities you can travel by rental car, cab or train to the port of Piombino. An alternative airport closer by is Marina di Campo on Elba itself, but it is less frequent.
Ferries
From Piombino, several companies, such as Moby Lines and Toremar, regularly sail to Elba. The crossing takes about 40-60 minutes and takes you to ports such as Portoferraio, Rio Marina or Cavo. It is possible to take your car on the ferry, or you can choose to travel as a foot passenger and rent transportation locally.
